Issue: On certain vehicles equipped with a 2.5-L 4-cylinder engine, the engine block may be porous. As a result, the engine block could crack and cause internal or external coolant leaks. This could cause engine overheating or internal engine damage and result in an engine failure. For non-hybrid vehicles, this could also result in a sudden loss of engine power while driving. Note: This problem may lead to engine noise, smoke, cause warning lights to turn on and/or cause an audible chime to sound before an engine failure. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, an engine failure could create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the engine block casting serial number. If the serial number is within the identified range, the dealer will replace the engine with a new one.
Certain passenger vehicles. The left front brake tube may be deformed prior to vehicle delivery due to improper installation of a coil spring spacer that was installed to prevent damage to the vehicle during transportation, if the brake tube is deformed significantly, it could contact the inner fender panel, and eventually cause damage to the tube due to vibration during driving. Brake tube damage could also lead to break fluid leakage after extended use of the vehicle. Correction: dealers will inspect the front brake line and, if necessary, replace the line.
Certain 2002 model Lexus ES300 vehicles, during air bag deployment, it is possible that the bottom seam of the front driver's side air bag module cover (horn pad) could be torn away allowing the bottom portion of the cover to completely detach from the air bag module. If this should occur, there is a possibility that the detached bottom portion may strike the driver causing personal injury. Correction: dealers will replace the driver's side air bag module.
On certain vehicles, the steering wheel set nut may loosen and cause an abnormal steering vibration and looseness. If the owner continues to operate the vehicle in this condition, the nut may eventually come off, and the steering wheel may separate from the steering shaft. This would result in loss of control and a possible crash. Correction: Steering wheel set nut will be tightened on affected vehicles.
UNDER EXTREMELY LOW TEMPERATURE OPERATING CONDITIONS AND INFREQUENT BRAKE OPERATION THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY THAT CONDENSED MOISTURE FROM A SURGE TANK MIGHT SEEP INTO THE BRAKE BOOSTER VACUUM HOSE AND FREEZE. OVER TIME, THE ICE MAY ACCUMULATE AND EVENTUALLY PLUG THE HOSE, THEREBY ELIMINATING THE VACUUM ASSIST TO THE BRAKES. THE INCREASED PEDAL PRESSURE REQUIRED TO APPLY THE BRAKES COULD LEAD TO AN INCREASE IN STOPPING DISTANCE AND A POSSIBLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT. CORRECTION: BRAKE VACUUM HOSE WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEWLY CONFIGURED VERSION.
DUST ACCUMULATION IN THE SECONDARY HOOD LATCH MAY CAUSE IMPROPER LATCH ENGAGEMENT. SHOULD A VEHICLE BE OPERATED WITHOUT THE PRIMARY LATCH PROPERLY ENGAGED, THE HOOD COULD OPEN SUDDENLY WITHOUT WARNING. THIS WOULD BLOCK THE DRIVER'S VISION AND COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH. CORRECTION: SECONDARY HOOD LATCH WILL BE REPLACED.
